I’m not sure how many of you have heard of this program, but it was in the news about a week ago. Essentially the government has been secretly monitoring a huge network of cameras around the country and using facial analysis to find known criminals/terrorists. It’s unknown exactly how long the program has been going on, but a huge amount of network traffic has been routed through a central government location, presumably owned by the FBI or NSA, and it’s monitoring an absolutely staggering number of cameras. It appears as though the government has gotten good enough at facial analysis, and standard security cameras have decent enough resolution, that this type of monitoring is possible. 1984, are we there yet?
